People who were legally adopted, or their natural parents, are now able to obtain information prevously kept private. All initial requests for Northern Territory adoption information must be forwarded to the Family and Children's Services Support Unit of the Northern Territory Health Services Department. The Registry will not enter into any correspondence from individuals seeking adoption information without prior verification from the Family and Children's Services Support Unit.

As many adoption applications require complex searches and sensitive enquiries, no exact time limit for processing these applications in the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry can be given.
